What are the benefits of bone broth?

Updated on:

Much like our friend the cauliflower, bone broth has had a major glow up recently.

But wtf is it?

It’s literally just broth. Upgraded. Way upgraded.

You can buy it. You can make it. And you really should do one or the other because it has a ton of benefits.

Bone broth is made by throwing animal bones (typically chicken or beef) into a stockpot of boiling water and letting it simmer all day.

Collagen, gelatin, amino acids, healthy fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals alllll come from these bones seeping into the broth, giving it a rich, delicious flavor.

If you’re buying it, it’s SO important to buy grass-fed (if using beef bones), organic bones to make bone broth, because alllllll the goodness from these bones are going to seep into the simmering water.

(Don’t worry – you can totally buy bone broth without all the homemade business – stay with me!)

While I love bone broth year-round, it’s great to have on hand during season changes when allergies/cold/flu starts coming up!

Here’s why you need bone broth:

BOOSTS IMMUNITY

The amino acids in bone broth – like arginine, glutamine, and cysteine – have been shown to boost immunity.

COMMON COLD KILLER

Why do we LOVE chicken soup when we’re sick? Because the broth, when it’s made from REAL healthy animal bones, can actually clear mucus and open respiratory pathways.

INFLAMMATION FIGHTER

The amino acids in bone broth reduce inflammation, and L-glutamine specifically reduces gut inflammation. This is another reason why bone broth is such an effective cold-killer. When we’re sick, our bodies are in a state of inflammation.

KEEPS US HYDRATED

Hydration is so important when keeping a healthy immune system! Bone broth contains electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium), making it an even better hydrator than water (and wayyyy more healthy than Gatorade or Pedialyte!).

HEALTHY GUT = HEALTHY BODY

Guys, gut health is hot, and for good reason. At least 70% of our immune system is located in our gut. I talked allllll about how important gut health is in this post, but it’s especially important during cold and flu season.

The gelatin and collagen in bone broth are so healing to your gut lining as they act as a “sealer.” If you have a lot of inflammation in the gut, you’re at risk of causing permeability so collagen is super important!

AND, BONUS BENEFITS – COLLAGEN:

All the same benefits that collagen peptides preach – like better hair, skin, nails, joints, and digestion, you’ll also get from bone broth. Win-win-win-win-win.

AN EASY BUTTON FOR BONE BROTH

Does making homemade bone broth sound dramatic? Yes, because it is.

Don’t let crunchy moms tell you it’s easy. First of all, you have to GET IN YOUR CAR and drive to the store to buy good, organic, grass-fed bones. Then, you have to put them in a big pot and add vegetables and seasonings and water. Then, you have to simmer it ALL DAY. THEN YOU HAVE TO STRAIN IT.

Nah. Pass.
