GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — This week, Hispanic Heritage month begins — a month to rejoice energy and unity within the Hispanic group.

Unity is on full show alongside Cesar E. Chavez Avenue as neighbors assist one another get by means of a highway construction mission that’s been unhealthy for enterprise.

“Truthfully, here we have our credit cards to be honest, personal loans to keep our doors open,” stated De Lacruz.

Reyes turns off some lights in M&M Bakery, attempting to lower your expenses.

“The customer say, ‘Why so dark?’ I say, ‘The construction,’” stated Reyes.

She began her enterprise 35 years in the past.

“Oh my gosh this is my life, this is my life,” she stated.

Her son, Joshua Reyes is the co-owner and sometime will inherit the enterprise. He’s amazed at how his mother retains this constructive angle.

“Her resilience is like no other, and her faith has been shown in all of this, trusting in the Lord through all of this,” stated Joshua Reyes.

Across the road at Rincon Criollo, it’s an identical story.

“We were just here trying to survive because we are very grateful to have this business my mom started almost 10 years ago,” stated De Lacruz.

She is proud to be on this neighborhood.

“It’s one of the biggest Hispanic business corridors,” De Lacruz stated.

She stated for individuals on this neighborhood, these are extra than simply companies.

“It’s not just food, just cake or just maybe customer service up the street, we are talking about culture, we are talking about heritage,” stated De Lacruz.

“That day I cried because two ladies came and they gave me $200, they put $200 on my counter,” stated Ivette Reyes.
