The NASA astronauts who have been left stranded on the International Space Station due to technical points with their spacecraft are maintaining in good spirits — even planning to vote in November — the pair revealed in a space to Earth name with the media on Friday.

“We are pushing the edges of the envelope in everything that we do. And it is not easy,” mission commander Butch Wilmore mentioned. “It's not an easy thing to do, but that's not why we do it. Maybe we do it because it's hard.”

Suni Williams, the mission’s pilot, and Wilmore have been scheduled to spend simply over per week aboard the ISS once they launched into the cosmos on June 5.

It has now been 100 days. And they will not be returning residence till February.

Their prolonged keep in space was attributable to technical points with their ship, the Boeing Starliner, throughout what was initially supposed to be a remaining take a look at flight earlier than the Starliner could be licensed by NASA for normal use in missions.

After deeming it probably unsafe to have Williams and Wilmore return aboard the Boeing spacecraft, the Starliner made its means again to Earth unmanned, the place it landed safely in the New Mexico desert final week.

“We're both Navy. We've both been on deployments,” Williams mentioned. “We’re not surprised when deployments get changed.”

The downside with the Boeing Starliner is the most recent in a collection of PR blows to the aerospace juggernaut, which in addition to spacecraft additionally produces business airplanes.

Boeing's 737 MAX has confronted security issues after two crashes left a whole bunch of passengers useless, and Boeing has struggled to restore the general public notion of their firm as being lax on air security.

But when requested whether or not the crew felt let down that the Starliner had to return with out them aboard, Wilmore mentioned no.

“A very risky business”

“It's a very risky business. And things do not always turn out the way you want,” he mentioned.

Drawing consideration to Williams’ NASA logoed shirt, he mentioned: “That represents something that we stand for as an agency. We go beyond. We do things that are out of the ordinary. We send humans to space.”

The two shared that whereas they missed their households and associates throughout missions, each the space flight veterans have been having fun with the time aboard the ISS and the work that they have been ready to do as members of the crew.

The astronauts will miss Election Day on Earth in November, however that will not preserve them from collaborating. “It's a very important duty that we have as citizens, and [we're] looking forward to being able to vote from space, which is pretty cool,” Williams mentioned.

Wilmore credited his religion with maintaining him resilient, and Williams described space as her “happy place.”

Wilmore and Williams will return to Earth in February aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft with two different crew members.
