A recent hunt is underway after a dad and his younger kids have been seen collectively for the primary time since they out of the blue vanished almost three years ago. On Thursday, a gaggle of pig hunters have been visiting a farm about 4km from Marokopa on New Zealand’s North Island after they bumped into the household traipsing by bushland.
Police have since confirmed the sighting was “indeed” Tom Phillips and his three kids aged 8, 9 and 10 — who have been reported lacking from the coastal city in late 2021.
Footage of the prospect encounter printed by the NZ Herald reveals Phillips and the kids sporting camouflage and carrying giant backpacks as they trek in a single line up grassy hills.
John McOviney instructed Newstalk ZB his teenage grandson snapped the clip simply moments after recognizing the household about 20 metres away on the “quite isolated” property.
“The children asked: ‘Who else knows we’re here?’ ” McOviney stated, including they have been sporting masks on the time however seemed to be in good well being.
“And then they just kept on walking. They were all packed up, they had big packs on. I think the father sort of kept them moving.”
McOviney stated his grandson, who referred to as him minutes after the unusual run-in, reportedly noticed Phillips carrying a gun so he didn’t attempt to work together additional. The boy notified police and submitted the video that night.
First sighting of all three kids ‘reassuring'
However, when dozens of officers and their helicopters descended on the 8,500 acre property the next morning, the household was gone.
“Police dispatched staff to the Marokopa area on Thursday night and a three-day search was commenced,” Detective Inspector Andrew Saunders stated in a press release.
“While nothing further of significance was located, investigators will now assess information gathered to determine any next steps.
“This is the first time all three of the children have been sighted, which is positive information, and we know it will be reassuring for the children's wider family.”
After reviewing the video, the NZ Herald studies the kids’s mum Cat turned emotional after immediately recognising them.
“I’m so happy that they’re all there,” she stated. “I’m so relieved to see all three of my babies. They’re all alive.”
Last 12 months, Phillips was seen alone getting into a Bunnings situated 100km from the most recent sighting. NZ police have urged these dwelling within the Marokopa group to stay alert and report any suspicious exercise — “no matter how minor” it appears.
